Robert William Fogel (natural July 1, 1926) is an American economic historian & man of science, & Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel winner in 1993 (with Douglass North).

Fogel was natural within New York City and was awarded a BA by Cornell University in 1948, an MA by Columbia University in 196& PhD by Johns Hopkins University in 1963. Fogel was a prof at Johns Hopkins (1958-1959), the University of Rochester (1960-1965 and 1968-1975), a University of Chicago (1964-1975 & 1981-) and Harvard University (1975-1981). Fogel married Enid Cassandra Morgan inside 1949 & has deuce toddlers.

He is better known when a advocate of quantitative methods around history, called cliometrics. His best known & controversial operate is Period on the Cross the 1974 two-volume quantitative study of U.s. slavery co-written with Stanley Engerman. In the book, Fogel argued that slaves in the U.s. South lived better so mill-hand did north.
